Projects | A185 / Church Bank

Details

Due to growing safety concerns at Church Bank and A185 Jarrow Road, it was felt further investigations needed to be undertaken with regards to the number of incidents of injury at this location. An initial review of the details of the accidents suggested that the right turn movement from the A185 into Church Bank was an area of concern.

It was subsequently decided that STC Road Safety team would investigate the problem in greater detail, conduct further traffic surveys and look to appoint a local consultant to review the information and devise concept proposals that would resolve the accident problems and improve traffic and pedestrian flows. GPS were subsequently commissioned to carry out this work and to submitted options to STC for further consideration.

The Project

South Tyneside Council commissioned GPS to conduct a feasibility study with regards to road safety concerns at the junction of Church Bank and the A185 Jarrow Road.

The location had witnessed a number of accidents at or near the junction over a period of time and due to the seriousness of the accidents, road safety concerns were rose which resulted in further investigations

Our Expertise

GPS undertook a preliminary investigation to look into traffic speeds and accident data in order to establish if there were any particular patterns or trends that could be identified from the data with regards to collision accidents.

Further to reviewing accident data and conducting an on- site visit, our investigations identified that a significant factor in the occurrence of such accidents related to those vehicles conducting the right turn manoeuvre from the A185 into Church Bank.

GPS subsequently identified several feasibility options in the form of preliminary design drawings which were submitted to South Tyneside Council. These designs outlined several road improvement measures depicting amended road layouts in the form of revised road markings and associated signage.

The Outcome

GPS produced an Options Report and a number of feasibility options which we felt would mitigate traffic flow and vehicle manoeuvre risk. The brief objective was met in full and provided several viable options to resolve accident problems and improving traffic and pedestrian flows at the junction.

In addition, the report and design options were produced within a tight timeframe set by the client and successfully delivered on time and to budget.
